Example USA 2025 Import Tariffs: Europe, Japan, and China

Europe (European Union)

  • General Tariff Rate: Most EU exports to the U.S. now face a new baseline tariff of 15%. This covers most goods previously subject to “reciprocal tariffs” and expands to include autos, auto parts, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors.
  • Steel, Aluminum, Copper: Remain at higher, separate tariffs, typically 50%. There are tariff rate quotas established for some of these goods, designed to keep tariffs at “historic levels” and not stack them on top of other levies.[2]
  • Implementation Date: Tariffs took effect August 1, 2025, as per the executive order signed July 31, 2025.

Japan

  • General Tariff Rate: Most Japanese imports with tariff rates below 15% are leveled up to 15%. If the existing tariff is above 15%, the higher rate stays, but the 15% “reciprocal” tariff does not stack.

    • Example: If a fabric was previously subject to a 7.5% tariff, it is now raised to 15%. If Japanese beef faced a 26.4% tariff, that rate remains unchanged.
  • Automobiles & Auto Parts: The U.S. agreed to reduce tariffs from 27.5% down to 15%, as part of a side deal for Japanese investment commitments. Overcharges from earlier stacking mistakes will be refunded.
  • Implementation: Tariffs began August 8, 2025, with amendments to the executive order promised to correct any double-charging errors.

China

  • General Tariff Rate: Most imports from China are now hit with a 125% duty rate, replacing earlier rates (previously 84%). Some categories have even higher rates: up to 245% for select goods such as electric vehicles and syringes.
  • Copper Products: A new 50% tariff introduced from August 1, 2025, for a range of copper-intensive goods (pipes, wires, rods, etc.), but does not stack with other Section 232 tariffs. Exemptions exist for refined copper and ores.
  • Exemptions: Pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, lumber articles, bullion, some energy and minerals, and certain goods already under other trade acts are exempt from new reciprocal tariffs.
  • Other Details: Some reduction in counter-tariffs for rare earth elements supplied to the U.S., but overall, most Chinese goods face sharply increased barriers.

About AB Projects LLC

This is a new company formed in 2025 in response to equipment suppliers and principles in non- US countries requesting help with moving production of their equipment to the USA.

The moves were triggered in response to the newly introduced reciprocal tariffs on import to the USA.

Our customers are companies with a significant portion of their sales being to US customers.

Already some production in the USA, for these companies is underway.

About Andy Bush (me).

I am a semi-retired oil and gas maintenance and reliability engineer, who does not like being retired. I started in oil at BP as a graduate trainee in 1974, spending all but seven years in the oil industry. Five of the seven years were spent as a contractor in US government services, two of the seven were in my own business.

In addition to operating AB Projects I offer engineering consulting services to oil and gas companies. I have a lot of industry experience and can save companies a lot of money with design reviews, maintenance and reliability advice..

I am also a writer. You can read about me in my published book: Memoirs of a Fun Life.
